Surgical technologists are responsible for assisting in surgical operations. They work under the supervision of surgeons and registered nurses. Surgical technologists work with operating room teams by helping with set-up and preparation. Surgical technologist set up sterile and non-sterile equipment, surgical instruments, and other equipment. They also prepare patients for surgery by disinfecting incision sites, washing, and shaving if needed.

Optometric technicians assist optometrists with eye examinations and during corrective procedures. They help diagnose eye conditions, record patient medical histories, and help advise patients after procedures and obtaining eye glasses or contacts. In many clinics and eye care centers, optometric technicians assist with vision therapy and eye exercises as well as assisting patients with selecting frames and contacts. Additional work activities include maintaining records and schedules, repairing eyeglasses, cleaning equipment, maintaining supply inventory, and follow-up calls.

Industrial maintenance technicians are responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining industrial systems. Industrial maintenance professionals duties include welding, electrical work, working with hydraulics, mechanical maintenance, maintenance machining, and programmable logic controller (PLC) maintenance. Industrial maintenance is a highly skilled field. As a result, all employers require a two-year technical diploma, an associate degree in industrial maintenance, or a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering.

Network specialists are responsible for installing, configuring, and supporting the local area network (LAN), Internet system, and wide area network (WAN) for companies and other organizations. Network specialists monitor networks, maintain network hardware and software, and supervise other computer specialists. As a result of the highly technical nature of network specialist positions, a bachelor’s degree is the bare minimum requirement for entry into this field.
